Slovenia is a land of many churches - around 3000 in total - and few more awe inspiring than St Thomas Church (Cerkev Sveti Tomaz). An incredible sunrise location, in some ways Slovenia’s equivalent of Corfe Castle - with photographers gathering to pray for a cloud inversion, with the church isolated above the mist, mountains (snow topped?) behind. Sunrise on the Cobb - Sunday morning - a bit tasty… only one problem with sunrise at 7.45 on a weekend, in school holidays, in a popular tourist town - so many people turned up to walk on the Cobb and watch sunrise! I’m not used to company at sunrise! Adding to my small collection of spiral staircase images - the beautiful Tulip Staircase at Queen’s House in Greenwich. Built in 1635, designed by Inigo Jones, and the first self-supporting (i.e. no central column) spiral staircase in Britain. Something a bit different - my first attempt at infrared photography on a bright sunny afternoon on my recent trip to Slovenia. Inspired by the brilliant infrared images taken by @jules90photo and @neiljburnell I bought a cheap IR converted Sony Nex-3 on eBay (compatible with my Sony E-mount lenses) plus a Hoya 72nm IR filter. Terrible to see the forest fires raging in Madeira on @demirayoralphotography story/feed yesterday. Can only hope they are brought under control before too much damage is done 🤞. I visited the island on April - sadly unwell with covid most of the time there! Very hard to get a puffin shot that is anything remotely unique or original, but I tried hard last week to get a few shots that were at least a bit different, not simply straight portraits. This is my favourite from the day, shooting through the grasses and flowers to create a soft dreamy ethereal feel (I hope!) - and I just love the emotion/expression on that puffin’s face! A weekend in Liverpool to visit my daughter as she turns 20… how the hell did I get old enough to have a 20 year old??! New Year’s Day 2023 - woken at 4.30 by my son coming home, at 5 by my daughter and at 6 by drunken noise of people leaving the party down the road - so, wide awake I headed off to the waterfalls for some peace and quiet, hoping the heavy rainfall in preceding days would create some decent flow. Sychryd is one of the few falls I know that looks better with lots of water, and it didn’t let me down. So first post of 2023 taken from exact same spot as first post of 2022 - hope I can be a little more imaginative as the year progresses! A pair of puffins basking in the spring sunlight on Skomer… having read up on puffins (highly recommend @drewbphotography Puffin book for the combination of his stunning photos and a great account of these amazing birds) I like to think this is a puffin couple! Apparently puffins after initially mating return to the same burrow on the same colony, year after year in a lifelong partnership. According to Drew ‘divorce rates among puffins are a lot lower than other species, with scientists observing only around 10% for British birds’. So here are Mr and Mrs Puffin, enjoying a bit of quality time together, relaxing before baby puffling comes along and destroy their peace!! I’ve been dreaming of a trip to Skomer for the last few years - delayed by covid and then a cancelled boat last year. Finally made it, and every bit as good as I’d hoped… as much for the experience of being up close with thousands of puffins as for the photography. Bright sunlight made things more challenging- so decided to work with it - find a patch of glistening sea and go for some bokehliciousness!! I’ve visited ‘Waterfall Country’ in the Brecon Beacons many times in the last few years (as those who follow me will be all too aware!!). So, don’t quite know how I hadn’t ever really appreciated the majesty of this breathtaking set of falls - Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn - on the 4 Waterfalls trail. I saw a stunning image by the brilliant photographer @itkapp (pls check out his account!) and realised I had to find the way to the other side of the falls for this amazing view. A bit of research, a scramble down a slightly crazy path, and there I was - totally blown away by the view in front of me. A trip down to Watchet on the Somerset coast on Friday - to shoot this cool little lighthouse- a great trip, but so so cold (-4 according to my car). Numb fingers led to a dropped brand new iPhone and a cracked screen. And then on my return discovered all my images were covered in hundreds of spots where I’d messed up cleaning the sensor the night before!! Yesterday morning at Corfe - if you saw my story you’ll have seen that it was a bit special! Met up with local legend Pete Scott (@naturehawk ) after a 4am alarm & a drive down to Dorset wondering if the conditions of Thursday morning (see @thebristolnomad image) would be repeated. Well Happy New Year folks - it’s been a while since I’ve had anything to post, limited camera time and terrible weather - the usual excuses! But I did manage a trip to the waterfalls on Monday, accompanied by my son who again patiently waited whilst I scrambled down the bank again at Sychryd to get this shot. Monday morning - a fab sunrise but strangely less so where I was stood than some locations people posted from - I think a lot of the drama was hidden behind the houses of Redcliffe - but even so, it was mighty fine! All was looking good for killer reflections until my nemesis, the rowers, arrived just as the sky got interesting 🤨!! Grabbed the 6 stop and went for 2 minute exposure to smooth out the water, and create some streaky sky effects! I’ve shot this composition a few times now - it just works there, simple, clean, uncluttered- and enjoying building a collection of shots from the same spot in very different conditions. The Bristol Channel & it’s crazy tidal range - 2nd largest in the world apparently after the Bay of Fundy in Canada - creates some pretty dramatic scenes with super high spring tides, like here at Clevedon Marine Lake. Went for a 30 second exposure here, firstly because I really liked the texture in the water around the steps, and secondly (and more honestly) the tide was coming in so fast I had to grab the shot before major welly breaching took place! A few more waterfall shots to go I’m afraid!! This is of course the fantastic Sgwd Gwladys, at Pontneddfechan - a popular waterfall for photographers, but one I’ve never really got an image I love before - until now! And the game changers were 1. Lots of water, 2. Autumn colour in those trees and 3. Landscape orientation - I’m terrible for going straight for portrait orientation as it suits insta so much better- but after a conversation a few months ago with @sambinding I’m determined to shoot landscape when the composition demands it! I think this is possibly my favourite image I have created (to date!) - hope you like it too! I think I just feel it brings together some of the elements I’ve been working on - clean compositions that create simplicity from complexity; images that tell a bit of a story (I think this image has that kind of magical forest grotto feel that I wanted); colour, depth, movement etc - so for once, I’m happy with one of my shots. Well there’s a Simon & Garfunkel song that springs to mind - but that would be too cheesy right??!! Sychryd falls in spate on Friday - wow, so different to previous visits - not the usual calm little grotto! Worried there would be too much water to get a decent shot - but so happy with how this worked out - 1/3 second exposure giving some lovely patterns and contrast in that water. Another from my trip to the Elidir trail a couple of weeks ago - Sgwd Ddwli Isaf. Well I’d hoped to be posting endless shots of puffins this week, but as you may have caught on my story, my long anticipated trip to Skomer on Tuesday was cancelled at the last minute due to wind conditions - gutted, a day of annual leave, a 5am alarm but more than anything I was so looking forward to seeing those amazing creatures for the first time! ‘Golden Spiral’ - from a half term trip to London, a chance to visit the incredibly elegant Cecil Brewer staircase in Heal’s Department Store on Tottenham Court Rd - completed in 1916, with a bespoke Bocci chandelier added during refurbishment in 2013. I had visited once before a couple of years ago, soon after getting interested in photography- I wanted to return with a wider lens, and with a composition in mind - a perfect golden spiral or Fibonacci spiral - see my story if you want to see it demonstrated with a Lightroom crop overlay.
